More About Sedation Dentistry
It is common for some patients to feel nervous or apprehensive about dental work they require. Dr. Yzaguirre offers several ways to help you achieve your dental goals. A complete medical history is always taken to determine which method is best for you. Safety always comes first when managing our patients, and consultations are needed before any sedation procedure.

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen given to patients to relax. This is commonly used with restorative and minor surgical procedures. It is easily controlled, has few side effects and patients are not required to bring an escort to drive them home.

Oral Sedation
A medication is prescribed by Dr. Yzaguirre to be taken as directed in order to achieve a higher level of sedation. This is a conscious sedation that allows patients to relax. This form of sedation is easily performed, however, it has limitations. At times, patients may not remember parts of their procedure and may even feel sleepy for the remainder of the day. An escort is required for patients to return home safely.

Intravenous Conscious Sedation
I.V. sedation is given to those for whom a more predictable level of sedation is required. A small catheter is placed in the patient's vein (usually the arm) and various I.V. medications are used to help sedate the patient. Monitors (EKG, Pulse Ox, and Blood pressure/pulse) are used for the entire procedure. Good candidates for I.V. sedation include individuals in good health with clear expectations. Typically, I.V. sedation is used for surgical procedures and for those patients for whom oral sedation is inadequate. It is a requirement that patients have an escort to drive them home safely after their appointment.
